But, as if tiring of writing a straightforward if very quirky action novel, in Chapter Twelve Ewing moves on to outlandish socio-political satire; then, in Chapter Fifteen, Ewing throws out the rulebook and introduces a hilariously unlikely and unexpected pop culture cameo.
After this all bets are off, and we get chapter nineteen, which, for sheer absurd post-modernism would be pretty hard to beat. All while sustaining a lively and entertaining narrative. Death Got No Mercy isn't the most complicated of the books, by some long way, as the plot is fairly simple.
One man, Cade, leaves his isolated mountain home to attempt to find some medicine for his partner. He heads for San Francisco, running into several groups along the way, none of home are particularly friendly, but then that doesn't matter as Cade is basically a killing machine who takes on anyone and everyone, in a manner somewhat more fitting to a Terminator than a person.
Death Got No Mercy (The Afterblight Chronicles, #7) by Al Ewing
However, despite the plot not being tricky - other than one random aside into the authors' working methods - there are still surprises, and the action, of which there is a lot, is very well done which makes for an exciting read. Nov 19, Megalion rated it it was ok Shelves: I've been enjoying the Afterblight Chronicles as I skip around the series but obey trilogy order. This is the first one that disappoints. It has the same basic trope as The Culled. Stone cold ex-soldier who is ruthless and possesses phenomenal fighting skills. And sets out to fulfill it.
In this one, Cade is more aggressive, deader in spirit, pessimistic, and more violent. The acts of violence are ratched up a few creative notches and felt even more like torture porn.

There is I've been enjoying the Afterblight Chronicles as I skip around the series but obey trilogy order. There is also more swearing. Essentially this book is The Culled on steroids. I stopped reading it about a third of the way in as I didn't see any indication of there being a payoff if I stuck with it. Unless the books are part of a trilogy there are two in the overall series as of now , I find that its not necessary to have read the others to enjoy the one you're reading.
They cover different places and post Cull circumstances. There are some loose ties connecting the stories together but it doesn't seem to matter where you start picking up the threads of the overall Afterblight story. I recommend skipping this unless you enjoy very aggressive protagonists and unusual acts of violence and torture.
